Glenavon Community is locally regarded as a small community of approximately 500 households surrounding Glenavon School; bordered by Wolverton Street and Tiverton Road in the north, Whitney Street in the east, Margate Road in the south and Miranda Street in the west; between the suburbs of Avondale and Blockhouse Bay, Auckland.

Housing New Zealand has approximately 230 properties in this area.  They have no phone contact with about one third of their tenants and overcrowding is an ongoing issue (HNZC New Lynn).

Glenavon School is a decile 2 school of about 250 students.   There is a wide range of ethnicities in the school, including 65% Maori/Polynesian (ERO).

The 2006 Census shows that approximately 8% of Glenavon households contain more than one family.  50% of Glenavon residents have an annual income of $20,000 or less.  30% of families with children are solo-parent.  10% of households have no access to a vehicle.  23% of people over 15 years of age have no formal qualifications.

These statistics are all above-average compared to the Auckland region.  They may be even higher, as a significant section of the Glenavon census block is comprised of households from the more affluent New Windsor suburb.
